POSITION SUMMARY:

This employee has the responsibility for coordination of total resident care. The Nursing Supervisor performs responsible supervisory and professional work in directing and coordinating all nursing units. The individual must have had advanced training and broad nursing experience including supervisory duties. The work requires administrative ability, knowledge of training techniques, ability to adapt techniques and procedures in accordance with unusual situations, and the exercise of initiative and good judgment. The work is carried out according to standards of professional nursing practices, facility policies, rules and regulations, and State and Federal regulations.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1Verifies daily staffing and redistribution, as necessary;

2Collaborates with all charge nurses daily, to exchange information regarding resident care, resident condition and all matters affecting resident well-being (i.e. admissions, discharges, transfers, out of or within the building), makes recommendations regarding nursing process, and communicates concerns to supervisors of other departments;

3Makes rounds, morning and night, as time allows, to assess residents condition, giving special attention to critically ill residents;

4Ensures that the individual nursing care plan is followed for each resident;

5Performs medication passes and/or direct resident care as needed;

6Participates in resident care committee meetings;

7Reinforces the training and orientation of nursing personnel and provides positive reinforcement;

8Answers any/all emergencies throughout the shift (i.e., change of resident condition or pronouncement of death);

9Assists in assuring a safe and sanitary environment for residents, employees, and visitors;

10Assures that the building is secure during the evening and night hours by checking doors and alarms according to nursing facility protocols;

11Reviews incident and investigative reports for accuracy and completeness;

12Monitors meal service on the units and in the dining areas to identify issues requiring intervention and to assure resident meal satisfaction and nutritional adequacy;

13Assists in development and implementation of nursing facility Quality Improvement Program;

14Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals’ needs and rights;

15Performs other duties as requested.

SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL/ VOCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

1The Nursing Supervisor must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and there must be current registration with the professional board of nurse examiners of the state.

2Experience in the nursing field.

3Supervisory experience in long term care is required

JOB SKILLS:

1Must have thorough knowledge of nursing theory, techniques and practices.

2Must have thorough knowledge of the specialized procedures applied and equipment used in the area to which assigned.

3Must have knowledge of dietetic, sanitation, and personal hygiene.

4Must have knowledge of medications, their proper dosage and expected results.

5Must have skill in handling and manipulating instruments and equipment.

6Must be able to coordinate and supervise the nursing functions in an effective manner.

7Must be able to maintain an empathetic attitude toward residents and to gain their confidence in order to work with them effectively.

8Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions of a technical nature.

9Must be able to recognize and identify symptoms and to make decisions quickly in emergencies.

10Must be able to train subordinates in work procedures and to organize and direct training carried out by members of the staff.

11Must possess the ability to positively interact with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.

12Must provide annual verification of a negative TB skin test.

PERFORMS RELATED DUTIES:

1Interacts with residents, families, visitors and employees.

2He/she carries out other tasks as requested in situations where hands-on intervention/participation may be required.
