The Stanford University Maternal and Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI) focuses on mobilizing Stanford research discoveries and expertise to improve healthier lives for expectant mothers and children. One major area of emphasis for MCHRI is addressing the impact of structural racism and social injustice as key drivers in health disparities that affect maternal and child health.

Community-Engaged Research is a key component in promoting health equity. It is an approach in which researchers and community stakeholders work in partnership to address problems that are of importance to the community. In this approach, researchers and stakeholders also work together to design, implement, and evaluate studies, and to disseminate study findings for timely impact on policies and practices. Using a community-engaged approach enhances the creative process by bringing to the table new and relevant insights and contributes to a culture of health equity in all aspects of translational research in maternal and child health.

We are seeking a Community-Engaged Research (CER) Manager to join the MCHRI team to build infrastructure and develop new initiatives related to Community-Engaged Research. The CER Manager will work under the general direction of CER faculty leadership to develop, implement, and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of CER in maternal and child health at Stanford. The CER Manager will participate in strategy development, long-range planning, and partnership development across Stanford, with other academic institutions, and the community. The position will report to the Faculty Director for CER and to the Executive Director of MCHRI.

Community-Engaged Research Manager will be responsible for:

  • Landscape mapping process to identify barriers and facilitators to CER.
  • Identify and catalog all individuals at Stanford conducting CER related to MCHRI populations.
  • Scope IRB issues, contractual, consultant payment, and other barriers to CER and bring pain points to bring to higher level.
  • Liaise with other University and School of Medicine (SoM) partners to address unique support needs of researchers conducting CER approaches with maternal and child health populations such as:
  • SoM Office of Community Engagement
  • University Office of Community Engagement
  • Department of Pediatrics Office of Child Health Equity
  • Stanford Impact Labs
  • Gather information about successful models for building CER from other academic institutions.
  • Organize monthly seminars for trainees, faculty to obtain and provide feedback on proposals and studies using a CER approach.
  • Assist with grant applications to help build CER infrastructure and training programs (PCORI, CTSA, NIH T32).
  • Assist with writing reports and presentations to leadership team.
  • Help update MCHRI website and provide content for social media feeds related to community-engaged research.
  • Help develop toolkits and educational materials related to CER.
  • Help create a matching system to link community-partners with MCHRI researchers to work on mutually salient research.
  • Duties include:

    • Develop and manage research programs by conducting research activities, including outreach to varied stakeholders within the program, assigning resources and making program improvement recommendations that impact policies and programs.
    • Identify, recommend and implement opportunities for new research.
    • Source, collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.
    • May teach and/or assist in the teaching and administration of seminars. May develop curriculum.
    • Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities.
    • Contribute to and inform on strategic program/entity planning and related funding and financial sustainability.
    • May advise students and/or coach/mentor clients. Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities.
    • Develop or contribute to outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding.
    • Coach and mentor program staff.
    - Other duties may also be assigned

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    The CER Manager must be experienced in managing programs and coordinating with diverse partners from multidisciplinary fields. They should have a background in health-related fields, including public health or health policy. Successful candidates will be skilled in interacting with faculty, staff, administrative leaders, trainees, and community partners and in working independently to help lead programs with direction from the Director of CER.

    EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

    Bachelor's degree and three or more years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree such a masters' degree is beneficial. Experience managing a budget and developing financial plans is valuable.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
    • Ability to develop and coordinate program partnerships and funding sources.
    • Superb attention to details.
    • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
    • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
    • Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.
    • Experience working with community organizations and public agencies is desired.
    • Diverse background and lived experiences also highly valued.
    CERTIFICATIONS and LICENSES:

    • For teaching jobs, advanced degree or certification may be required for some programs.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
    • Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
    • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
    • Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
    • On-campus mobility.
