Position Overview: As a Blood Bank Technician, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and availability of blood products for patients in need. Your primary responsibility will be to collect, process, test, and distribute blood and blood products for transfusion. This role demands meticulous attention to detail, adherence to strict protocols, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
Blood Collection and Processing: Perform venipunctures to collect blood from donors, ensuring proper identification and labeling of specimens. Process blood donations to separate components such as red blood cells, platelets, and plasma using automated equipment or manual techniques.
Testing and Analysis: Conduct pre-transfusion compatibility testing to ensure compatibility between donor blood and recipient blood. Perform routine blood typing, antibody screening, and infectious disease testing using laboratory equipment and following established protocols.
Inventory Management: Monitor blood inventory levels, ensuring an adequate supply of blood products for transfusion needs. Rotate blood products according to expiration dates and maintain accurate records of inventory transactions.
Quality Control: Perform quality control procedures to validate the accuracy and reliability of test results. Follow established procedures for troubleshooting equipment malfunctions and resolving technical issues.
Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of all blood collection, processing, testing, and distribution activities. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
Requirements:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's or bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related field preferred.
Certification: Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or equivalent preferred. Additional certifications in blood banking (e.g., SBB, BB) desirable.
Experience: Prior experience in blood banking or clinical laboratory setting preferred. Familiarity with laboratory equipment and procedures highly advantageous.
Skills: Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in computer applications for data entry and analysis.
Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long periods, lift and move heavy objects (up to 50 pounds), and work in a fast-paced environment.
